SS 409
Ti-stabilisedSS 409 is a titanium-stabilised ferritic stainless steel with about 11% chromium. It is the most economical grade for exhaust pipes, mufflers and catalytic converter shells, offering good corrosion and heat resistance.
Heat-resistant ferritic stainless steel coils and sheets for exhaust systems, mufflers and catalytic converters.
Automotive grade stainless steel is a group of ferritic stainless steels designed for vehicle parts that face high temperature, moisture, road salt and constant vibration. The grades SS 409, 409L, 436, 439 and 441 are stabilised with titanium and/or niobium, which gives them good oxidation resistance, weldability and formability.
Because they are nickel-free or low in nickel, these ferritic grades are more cost-effective and lighter than austenitic stainless steels, which is why they are widely used in exhaust systems, mufflers, catalytic converters and emission-control components.
SS 409 is a titanium-stabilised ferritic stainless steel with about 11% chromium. It is the most economical grade for exhaust pipes, mufflers and catalytic converter shells, offering good corrosion and heat resistance.
409L is the low-carbon version of SS 409. The lower carbon gives better weldability and reduced sensitisation, making it ideal for welded exhaust tubing and assemblies.
SS 436 is a 17% chromium ferritic grade with molybdenum and niobium/titanium stabilisation. It offers better pitting resistance, good deep drawability and a bright finish, so it is used in exhaust parts and automotive trims.
SS 439 (EN 1.4510) is a titanium-stabilised 17% chromium grade with strong high-temperature oxidation resistance and excellent weld quality. It is commonly used for hot-end exhaust components, manifolds and EGR coolers.
SS 441 (EN 1.4509) is a dual-stabilised (niobium + titanium) 18% chromium ferritic grade. It has outstanding thermal fatigue strength, creep resistance and corrosion resistance, and is preferred for demanding hot-end exhaust applications.

Cold rolled coils, sheets, strips and cut-to-size plates in various thicknesses and finishes, supplied with mill test certificate.
Ferritic grades give good heat and corrosion resistance at a lower cost than austenitic grades, and they have low thermal expansion.
409L has lower carbon content (0.03% max), which improves weldability and reduces the risk of sensitisation.
Grades 439 and 441 are preferred for hot-end parts because of their higher chromium content and stabilisation with titanium and niobium.
